Essential maintenance work to protect one of South Tyneside’s most iconic landmarks will begin next week.

From Monday 29 June, specialist contractors will start restoration work on the clock tower at South Shields Town Hall. The project will address areas of deterioration and help secure the future of the historic structure, which has stood for almost 120 years.

The programme of works will include repairs to the bell hammers, support beams and clock faces. Scaffolding will be erected to allow contractors to safely inspect and carry out the necessary repairs.

Councillor Susan Sybenga, Deputy Leader of South Tyneside Council with responsibility for Finance and Resources, said: “South Shields Town Hall clock tower is an important part of our Borough’s heritage and a much-loved landmark for residents and visitors alike.

“These works are essential to protect the structure and ensure it remains safe, operational and in good condition for many years to come.

“We are committed to looking after our historic buildings and continue to review maintenance requirements across our estate so they can be enjoyed by future generations.”

The work is expected to be completed later this year. Throughout the project, public access to and from the Town Hall building will remain unaffected.

The clock tower is part of the Grade II listed Town Hall, and the maintenance programme forms part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to preserving its historic buildings and ensuring they remain in good condition for future generations.

Councillor Sybenga added: “Our Town Hall sits at the heart of the town. By investing in essential maintenance now, we’re helping to protect this historic landmark and avoid more significant repairs in the future.”
