A chart-topping 90s boyband has been announced as the latest act to join the line-up for one of South Tyneside’s biggest summer music events.

The ever-popular Sunday Concerts, part of the This is South Tyneside Festival, return to Bents Park on 19 July, with local favourite Joe McElderry headlining the show.

South Tyneside Council has now revealed that hit-makers 911 will also take to the stage, adding even more star power to the day’s entertainment.

The trio enjoyed huge success throughout the 1990s, scoring ten top ten singles and selling more than six million albums worldwide. They first found fame with their cover of Shalamar’s A Night to Remember before going on to secure a number one single with A Little Bit More.

They will perform alongside Joe McElderry, Sonia and local artists Shelley Stevens and Channy in a day of live music that will also celebrate Pride in South Tyneside.

Councillor Elliott Curry, Lead Member for Culture, Leisure, Tourism and the Voluntary Sector at South Tyneside Council said: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome 911 to this year’s Bents Park Live line-up.

“They’re a band that so many people will remember, and their addition really adds to what is already shaping up to be a brilliant day of music and celebration.

“The festival is all about bringing people together and creating unforgettable moments, and with artists like this alongside fantastic local talent, we’re sure this will be a day to remember.

“These events offer incredible value for money and give residents and visitors the chance to enjoy live performances from well-known artists right here on our doorstep.”

This year’s concerts are supported by Go North East, with Managing Director Ben Gilligan welcoming the company’s involvement.

“We’re proud to be sponsoring this year’s This is South Tyneside Festival, a fantastic celebration of music, community and the best of South Tyneside,” he said.

“As the region’s largest bus operator, we’re passionate about connecting people with the places and events that matter to them. The festival is a brilliant opportunity for residents and visitors to come together, support the local area and enjoy a great summer of entertainment by the coast.

“We’re delighted to be playing our part and look forward to helping people get there sustainably and affordably by bus.”

The 19 July concert is the first of three major Sunday shows taking place this summer.

On 26 July, 1980s favourites ABC will headline, performing classic hits including The Look of Love, Poison Arrow and When Smokey Sings. They will be joined by Chesney Hawkes and Nuromantica.

The festival concludes on 2 August with legendary DJ Judge Jules, who will perform a set of dance anthems accompanied by a full live band. The final concert will also feature leading UK dance act Ultrabeat.

Each event will also showcase a range of local performers, continuing the festival’s commitment to supporting emerging talent and providing opportunities to perform in front of large audiences.

General admission tickets purchased in person cost £5 for those aged 17 to 65, while tickets for children aged 11 to 16 and adults aged 66 and over are £2. Children aged 10 and under can attend free of charge. Online bookings are subject to a booking fee, excluding free tickets.

Tickets are available through www.visitsouthtyneside.co.uk and will be emailed to customers before being scanned on entry to the event.

Alongside the Sunday Concerts, this year’s This is South Tyneside Festival will also feature live music at the Amphitheatre, the spectacular Summer Parade, Proms in the Park and the popular Kids Fun-Fest.
