Patients across South Tyneside and Sunderland are benefiting from some of the fastest NHS care in the country according to the latest NHS performance data.

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust (STSFT) is now ranked 15th of all 134 Trusts nationally and is the 3rd best large acute Trust in England.

The latest performance data published by NHS England through the National Oversight Framework (NOF) puts STSFT amongst the very best-performing NHS organisations in the whole country.

The National Oversight Framework measures NHS performance across a range of areas, including access to services, patient safety, effectiveness and experience of care, people, finance, productivity and innovation.

The Trust is now Segment 1, the highest category possible, which recognises organisations delivering strong performance and requiring no additional support.

The latest results, which cover the first three months of the current financial year, give STSFT an overall average score of 1.88 out of 4.00. The lower the score, the better.

STSFT is now ranked 1st in England for:

  • eliminating waits of more than 52 weeks for planned hospital treatment or community care, with no patients currently waiting longer than a year
  • making sure patients waiting for community-based care get this within 18 weeks of referral
  • how quickly we set up clinical trials, helping to improve care through participation in trials.

The latest national ranking also shows the Trust continues to maintain a balanced financial position while delivering improvements for patients.

The Trust’s strong performance reflects its vision for excellence for the people of South Tyneside and Sunderland and its ambition to progress to Advanced Foundation Trust status. This is a new marker of excellence in the NHS for Trusts who demonstrate excellent patient care, strong leadership, good financial management and effective partnership working.

Alison King is STST’s Director of Performance said: “Providing high-quality care is our top priority, whether that’s through the treatment we offer in our hospitals or through our extensive community services.

“These results show that our teams are helping more people receive the care, treatment and support they need without unnecessary delays.

“All our teams work hard to make this possible and I want to thank them for everything they do.”

The Trust is continuing to support the ambitions set out in the NHS 10 Year Health Plan, including expanding digital services, delivering more care closer to home and helping people stay healthier for longer.

This includes investing in new technology, supporting more people in community settings and helping patients take earlier action to improve their health and wellbeing.
