A striking new mural is set to transform South Shields’ Sandhaven Amphitheatre after local singer and television star Joe McElderry selected the winning design from a final shortlist of 10 entries.
The artwork was chosen as part of a borough-wide community competition that attracted almost 100 submissions, showcasing the creativity, coastal heritage and community spirit that make South Tyneside unique.
The winning design will be revealed for the first time during a special unveiling event at Sandhaven Amphitheatre tomorrow from 3.30pm to 5pm.
The event will not only celebrate the completion of the new mural but will also mark the official launch of this year’s summer live music season at one of South Tyneside’s most popular outdoor venues.
Organisers expressed their gratitude to Joe McElderry for supporting the project as a judge. The South Shields-born performer has a long-standing connection with the Amphitheatre, having appeared on its stage throughout the years and attended much-loved community events, including Tommy’s Parties, making his involvement particularly meaningful.
Visitors attending the unveiling will also be treated to a live performance from local favourites The Lovemakers, who will help kick off the Amphitheatre’s summer music programme.
The afternoon promises live entertainment, a relaxed seaside atmosphere and the opportunity for residents and visitors alike to be among the first to see the venue’s colourful new backdrop.
The project has been made possible through the support of a number of local organisations and businesses, including TEDCO, Big Local Jarrow, Shaun Matthias Decorating Contractors, Colmans, Octopus Energy, All Scaff Services and Hays Travel, with additional support provided by South Tyneside College.
Organisers are encouraging the community to come along to the free event to celebrate local creativity and enjoy the start of another exciting summer at Sandhaven Amphitheatre.
