A new Blue Plaque has been unveiled in South Shields recognising the importance of the historic Glassworks Chimney to the town’s industrial heritage.

The Blue Plaque was unveiled by the Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside, Councillor Stan Wildhirt and his wife Dawn, during a celebration at The Word in South Shields, and later installed on the chimney.

The Mayor said: “The Glassworks at Mill Dam played a significant role in the growth and development of our town. The surviving chimney remains one of the most visible symbols of that legacy and of the hard work, innovation and enterprise that helped shape our community.

“By commemorating the Glassworks Chimney with a Blue Plaque we help preserve the memory of an industry that supported local families, contributed to the town’s prosperity, and played a significant role in South Shields’ industrial past.”

Cookson Glassworks was once a key part of South Shields’ thriving industrial economy. Established in the 18th century, it became one of the leading glass manufacturing businesses in the region. The Cookson family were prominent glassmakers, and by the early 19th century the glassworks was regarded as one of the largest glass manufacturers in the country.

For many years, the site at Mill Dam provided employment for local people and contributed to the town’s reputation for manufacturing, innovation, and enterprise, until the late 19th century, when the site was acquired by the Harton Coal Company and later demolished to make way for new industrial developments.

Today, the chimney is all that remains of the once extensive glassworks complex. Carrying a date stone of 1865 and having reduced in height over time, it serves as a visible reminder of this chapter in the Borough’s history and stands as a symbol of the skilled workforce and industries that helped shape the local community.

Its survival is a remarkable story in itself, having been saved from demolition thanks to the quick actions of local workers who recognised its historical significance back in 1919.

Val Parks, of the South Shields Local History Group, nominated the site for a Blue Plaque and as part of the unveiling event shared the history of the Glassworks and its significance to the area.

Val said: “The history of glassmaking in South Shields is a fascinating story of innovation, craftsmanship and industry.

“From the pioneering work of the Cookson family to the international success of local manufacturers, the chimney is a powerful symbol of a chapter of our history that deserves to be remembered and celebrated. Its survival is also a testament to the importance local people place on preserving our heritage. Had those workers not intervened to stop its demolition, this important piece of South Shields’ history could have been lost forever. This Blue Plaque is a fitting tribute to both our glassmaking heritage and the people who helped ensure its story lives on for future generations.”

The South Tyneside Blue Plaque scheme recognises individuals, structures and buildings that have made a significant contribution to South Tyneside’s culture and heritage.

The Mayor added: “Blue Plaques play an important role in helping us recognise the people, places and events that have shaped our history, ensuring their stories continue to be told for future generations.”
