The Jarrow March remains one of the most important events in South Tyneside’s history, when in 1936, around 200 unemployed men from Jarrow, marched approximately 300 miles to London to demand work and better living conditions.
The march also known as the Crusade highlighted the severe unemployment and poverty affecting industrial communities in the North East during the Great Depression.
To commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Jarrow March, a special public exhibition will be open to the public at Jarrow Town Hall.
Archive images and information displays will tell the story of the 200 Crusaders who left Jarrow on 5 October 1936 and walked almost 300 miles to London to call for jobs and investment in their town.
The exhibition is free to attend and takes place on Saturday 3 October and Sunday 4 October, 10am to 2pm. A guided walking tour delving into the history of the Jarrow Crusade will also take place on Sunday, October 4.
