South Shields is set to come together later this month to mark Armed Forces Day, with a packed programme of activities celebrating the contribution of serving personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets and military families.
Although the national day takes place on Saturday, 27 June, South Shields will mark the day on Sunday. 21 June.
Organisers say this year’s event will be the 21st consecutive celebration in South Tyneside, attracting thousands of visitors from across the North East and beyond.

Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to raise public awareness of the contribution made to our country by those who serve and have served in the Armed Forces. Also, it gives the nation an opportunity to ‘Show Your Support’ for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to Service families and from veterans to cadets.
The Uniformed Parade will depart Gypsies Green at 10:30am, led by a marching band, making their way along Sea Road to Bents Park for a short service in the park, prior to the family fun activities.
Armed Forces Day provides an opportunity for communities to show their support for the men and women who serve in the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force, as well as veterans, reservists and military families.
Visitors to South Shields can expect a day filled with military-themed displays, community activities and entertainment, creating a family-friendly atmosphere along the coast. The event has grown significantly over the years and continues to attract support from local organisations, veterans’ groups and members of the armed forces community.
The celebration serves as an opportunity not only to recognise the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces, but also to highlight the strong connection between South Tyneside and the military community. The borough is home to a number of veteran support organisations and groups that work throughout the year to provide friendship, assistance and opportunities for former service personnel and their families.
