Sandhaven Beach in South Shields has once again secured its place among England’s top coastal destinations after retaining the highly respected Seaside Award.
The award, organised by Keep Britain Tidy, recognises beaches that consistently achieve high standards for cleanliness, safety, environmental care, and visitor facilities.
Sandhaven continues to stand out as one of the North East’s best-loved beaches, attracting both locals and visitors throughout the year thanks to its clean sands, family-friendly atmosphere, and well-kept surroundings.
Seaside Award acts as a trusted sign that a beach is being cared for properly and offers a safe, enjoyable environment for the public.

Gary Kirsop, Director of Community Operations at South Tyneside Council, said: “Retaining the Seaside Award is a clear endorsement of the consistently high standards maintained at Sandhaven.
“Behind this award is year-round work to keep the beach clean, safe and well managed, from routine cleaning and inspections to wider care and seasonal preparation.
“It reflects the commitment of our frontline teams and partners who take pride in looking after our coastline, as well as the support of residents and visitors who help us protect it.”
The Seaside Award celebrate beaches across England that provide high-quality coastal spaces while encouraging ongoing improvements to seaside areas nationwide.
This year, Sandhaven was one of just 65 beaches across England to receive the honour.
Allison Ogden-Newton, Chief Executive of Keep Britain Tidy, said: “England is fortunate to boast some of the world’s finest beaches, and it’s encouraging to see this reflected in the award to Sandhaven signalling its high standards to all who visit or live nearby.
“Everybody involved in these achievements should feel proud of their ongoing work to care for and enhance these important local blue spaces.”
Visitors are still being encouraged to help care for the coastline by disposing of litter responsibly or taking rubbish home to help keep the beach looking its best for everyone.
