One of the best things about living in South Tyneside is the variety of scenery across the borough. From dramatic coastline views and peaceful riverside walks to village greens, cliffs, parks, and historic landmarks, there are so many places where you can stop for a moment and appreciate just how beautiful the area really is.
While many people instantly think of the seafront in South Shields, every part of South Tyneside has its own views and atmosphere worth exploring.
South Shields Coastline
The coastline around South Shields remains one of the most iconic views in the North East. Whether you’re walking along the seafront, standing near the piers, or looking out across the beaches on a sunny day, the sea views never really lose their appeal.
During summer, the coastline feels lively and vibrant, while colder months bring dramatic waves and peaceful walks with some incredible skies. Early mornings and sunsets are especially beautiful around the seafront and harbour area.

Marsden and Whitburn Cliffs
The stretch of coastline between Whitburn and Marsden offers some of the most dramatic scenery anywhere in South Tyneside. The cliffs, rock formations, and open sea create stunning views that feel miles away from busy town life.
Walking the coastal path here gives you panoramic sea views for miles, and it’s one of the best places in the borough to watch the sunset. On stormy days, the crashing waves make the coastline feel wild and powerful, while calm evenings bring some of the most peaceful scenery you’ll find anywhere locally.

Cleadon Hills
For wide panoramic views across the borough, Cleadon Hills is hard to beat. From the top, you can see across South Shields, Whitburn, Sunderland, Newcastle, and beyond on a clear day.
It’s a favourite spot for walkers, runners, photographers, and dog owners because of the open space and peaceful surroundings. The sunsets from Cleadon Hills can be incredible, especially during warmer months when the sky stretches across the landscape in bright colours.

Hebburn Riverside
Hebburn offers a completely different kind of scenery, but one that many locals love just as much. The riverside area gives beautiful views across the River Tyne, especially during sunrise or sunset when the water reflects the changing sky.
The riverside walks are calm and relaxing, making them perfect for evening walks, cycling, or simply sitting and watching the river activity pass by.
Jarrow Riverside and Historic Views
Jarrow has some incredibly underrated views, particularly around the riverside and historic areas. There’s something special about the mix of industrial history, open river scenery, and green spaces.
The area around St Paul’s Monastery also adds a historic backdrop that makes parts of Jarrow feel completely unique within the borough.
Sometimes it’s easy to forget how lucky South Tyneside is to have so much variety packed into one borough. You can go from riverside scenery in Hebburn and Jarrow to dramatic coastal views in Whitburn and South Shields within a short drive.
